Somerville, Massachusetts.

Not the first place that comes to mind when you’re in the mood to catch a twangy good timin’ honky tonkin’ band.

But if you found yourself in Davis Square on Saturday night you were in luck, for that’s where the sounds of a steel guitar greeted me as I walked down Holland Street towards Johnny D’s. Western Swing came to Somerville this night. Western Massachusetts that is, which is where this good timin’, gal-fronted outfit “GIRL HOWDY” hails from. I arrived late in their performance, but not too late to enjoy a handful of songs and a few libations with my cohort for the evening, DJ extraordinaire Belinda.

Out front in this band are the gals, Betsy Dawn Williams, vocals / flat top guitar  – Paula Bradley, vocals / piano
and Rose Sinclair on steel guitar. They are anchored by a solid rhythm section of Brian Rost on upright bass and Billy Nadeau on drums. The dance floor was crowded with two-steppin’ urban cowboys & gals, all of whom were clearly enjoying themselves, as were Belinda and I.

Although this is exactly the type of band that I would be happy to groove with till the end of the night, their set was over by 8:30. (The club had a 10 pm show featuring Dwight Yoakum sideman Pete Anderson)  However, the twangy good times were not over for me and Belinda or for the listeners of her radio program Bubbles In The Think Tank.  DJ B invited Girl Howdy over to the WMFO studios for an impromptu live set. So they loaded up their wagons (mini vans) and blazed a trail up the road about a mile and a half to WMFO, where I got to enjoy playing the roadie for the load-up to the third floor studio. I don’t regret cracking a sweat for one second, for after a quick 10 minute set-up the band was ripping into another set of twangy treats.

The only thing missing were some cold beers !

Now through the wonders of modern radio technology, Bubbles In The Think Tank is able to bring to you this archived recording of GIRL HOWDY live in the studios of WMFO 91.5 FM in fabulous Medford, Massachusetts.
